What are Finland’s Big Five “S”s?
Sisu, Sauna, Santa, Stubb and … SLUSH!
I am in awe of SLUSH, “the most founder-focused event on earth” and the world’s largest annual IT startup-investor conference, in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The more I learned about it, the more fascinated and impressed I became. SLUSH is much more than an event. SLUSH is a “phenomenon”.
This year I was fortunate to write three online articles about SLUSH for Nikkei Business Publications, Japan’s leading business magazine and book publisher: Ms. Aino Bergius, CEO, and her leadership strategies for NIKKEI XWOMAN, and the two-part series about 2024 SLUSH that was held on November 19-21 for NIKKEI XTECH.
I hope these articles give readers insights into the marvel of SLUSH, a decisive engine of Finland’s innovation, creativity, economy and optimistic outlook.

私は、フィンランドの首都ヘルシンキで毎冬開催される「地球上で最も創業者に焦点を当てたイベント」であり、世界最大の IT スタートアップ投資家カンファレンスである「SLUSH」に畏敬の念を抱いています。「SLUSH」のことを知れば知るほど、私はますます魅了され、感動してきました。 「SLUSH」は単なるイベントではありません。「SLUSH」は「現象」です。
わたしは幸いなことに、今年、日本を代表するビジネス出版社日経BPにSLUSHに関するオンライン記事を3本寄稿しました。『日経 XWOMAN』にCEO のアイノ ベルギウス氏と彼女の経営・リーダーシップ戦略の紹介、そして『日経 XTECH』に11月19－21日に開催された2024年度SLUSHに関する2部構成のシリーズです。
この3本の記事を通じて、フィンランドの革新性、創造性、経済、そして楽観的展望の原動力である「SLUSH」の魅力について、読者の皆さまにより深い洞察を得ていただければ幸いです。

I’m thrilled to share a Leader Interview with Ms. Mervi Airaksinen, CEO, Microsoft Oy Finland, which was published on NikkeiXWOMAN on August 7 (in Japanese). Ms. Airaksinen told me a dramatic story of her turning around a mega IT company from an annual 7 million Euro loss to profitability and transforming it with a new business model, all the while having and parenting the first child who was born two months prematurely.
Plus, here are some of her memorable words:

Sustainable design born 90 years ago: Stool 60

Artek 2nd Cycle celebrates Stool 60’s 90th Anniversary with the “Decades” exhibition
Today’s business discussion would not be complete unless it included sustainability, but was it so 90 years ago?
Three bent wooden legs, one flat circular seat and nine nails. Stool 60 (1933) is a minimalist, functionalist, original sustainable invention that has endured in longevity and durability.
In Japan, Artek Tokyo collaborated with Paris-based Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane, and created “Stool 60 Sleeping Beauty,” the 90th Anniversary limited edition.
Tane buried raw birch sections from Finland in soils collected from different sites in Japan. He achieved, after numerous experiments, three different hues, yellow, black and white, as wood’s fiber absorbed the unique minerals and compounds of the soils.

Paavo Tynell (1890 – 1973) was a metalsmith, internationally famed Finnish lighting designer, and co-founder and chief designer of Taito Oy, established in 1818 as the first industrial producer of lighting fixtures in Finland, with the goal of manufacturing objects from gold, silver, bronze, and iron.
Tynell’s lighting designs from the 1930s to 1950s are illuminating some of the most prominent public spaces in Helsinki to this day. Anyone can walk into these buildings right now to be awed by their sculptural beauty and be emotionally uplifted by the intricate light-shadow ambiance that fills the spaces.
